APPRENTICESHIP
What is an Apprentice?

An apprentice is a highly committed individual who works full time under the direction of a skilled craftsperson while attending classes in the evening. ABC Apprentices are registered with Maryland Apprenticeship & Training Council (MATC), National Center for Construction, Education & Research (NCCER), approved for Veterans Administration benefits, and receive safety certifications including CPR, First Aid, OSHA and trade specific training.

How Long Does Apprenticeship Last?
Most apprenticeships last for 4 years or the equivalent of 8,000 supervised On-the-Job-Training Hours (OJTs) & a minimum of 576 classroom hours taught by certified & experienced instructors. In the Maryland apprenticeship process, both on the job training and classroom training are required. Registered apprentices work full-time while attending ABC Chesapeake's state-certified classes.

ABC Chesapeake does not provide job placement services. Potential apprentices find employment in their trade, then register with the ABC Chesapeake classroom training program. Of course, apprentices are paid for their work throughout their apprenticeship.

APPRENTICESHIP PROGRAM
ABC Chesapeake Chapter instituted an apprenticeship-training program nearly 30 years ago. Chesapeake Chapter currently trains apprentices in Electrical, HVAC and Plumbing. Our training venues are all affiliated with local community colleges, serving three distinct areas of Maryland from the Eastern Shore, to Annapolis and the extreme southern tip of the state.

Under the Education Committee and Chapter leadership and staff, the education department has achieved a number of successes including back-to-back Gold Medals at the National Craft Olympics in Electrical – 1999 and HVAC – 2000. Chesapeake takes great pride in our Local Craft Olympic competition, which is modeled after the national event, and is certain that this intense selection procedure has given us the advantage and produced two national champions.
